The Best Way to Train Animals

As CPDT (Certified Professional Dog Trainer) holders, we adhere to a strategy known as “Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive”, aka-- LIMA. LIMA describes a trainer or behavior consultant who uses the least intrusive, minimally aversive strategy out of a set of humane and effective tactics likely to succeed in achieving a training or behavior change objective. LIMA adherence also requires consultants to be adequately educated and skilled in order to ensure that the least intrusive and aversive procedure is used.

By definition, the LIMA method does not justify the use of punishment in lieu of other effective interventions and strategies. This means at Canine Compass Dog Training we’ll look at the entirety of your pets behavior, environment, and history to get the big picture. This method has been proven to solve behavior problems at their root, for true, solid solutions. In the vast majority of cases, desired behavior change can be affected by focusing on the animal’s environment, physical well-being, and operant and classical interventions such as differential reinforcement of an alternative behavior, desensitization, and counter-conditioning. All of these methods are used by our trainers, and provide our clients with a very high rate of success.

Have you previously worked with a dog training company who used an e-collar, shock collar, or prong collar immediately with your dog to use as their primary method of training? Many of our clients find us after working with companies who use these devices for teaching everything from obedience to treatment for reactivity, and now they are left with a scared and unreliable dog who has a lot of un-learning to do. At Canine Compass Dog Training, we always want to support and help our clients feel good about the training that is being used with their pets. Contact us today to find out more about how we can help you and your pet be successful!
