Frequently Asked Questions

1. What training methods do you use?

Positive-based and science-backed methods. I never use aversive tools because they are not necessary to fix problem behaviors, and they cause more behavioral issues in the long run. Through rewarding incompatible behaviors we can shape your dog into the best version of themselves!

2. If we have used e-collars, vibrate collars, or prong collars with our dog before, are you still able to work with our dog?

Yes absolutely! I pass no judgment onto owners who have used training collars before. My job is to educate and support those who are interested in helping their dogs become the best version of themselves.

3. My dog is super strong and we can barely control them. Are you able to handle large, strong breeds?

Yes, I have worked with many dogs that weigh over 100lbs. If I can train an elephant, I can train your dog!

4. Do you offer training for specific behavior issues?

Yes, every training program is tailored to the specific dog that I am working with. A list of everything I can train is located here.

5. How long are your training sessions?

One hour long each. For most training programs I work 1-on-1 with your dog 3 times a week, and then for the 4th session of the week we have a joint Guided Lesson together.

6. Do you offer follow-up sessions after a training program?

Yes, these are called Training Tune-ups, and are sold at a cheaper price per session than a regular training program. They are a-la-carte and can be scheduled as often as you’d like to help maintain everything your pup has learned throughout their program.

7. Do you offer any support during the program, but outside of training sessions?

Yes, of course! My goal is to always develop supportive and close relationships with my clients so they feel comfortable enough to text me questions or send me videos for feedback.

8. Do you offer group training classes or only private sessions?

At this time I only offer private sessions. However I do make exceptions for preparing clients for Canine Good Citizen Exams or for special circumstances such as introducing dogs together  or conducting joint maintenance sessions.

9. What qualifications do your trainers have?

As of right now, the only trainer for Canine Compass Dog trainer is the owner, Ellie. Find certifications and training experience here.

10. Do you offer training for puppies?

Yes! I can help with all puppy-related issues. Find a list of behaviors I can help with here.

11. Do you work with dogs who have a bite history?

Yes! All dogs are good dogs and benefit from positive-based training.

12. How do I schedule a training session?

Reach out via the contact form and write about the kind of training you’re looking for. Ellie will then contact you by your preferred contact method within 1-2 days.

13. What is your cancellation policy?

Once a deposit is received, your training program is reserved and non-refundable. However if your start date needs to be pushed back to a later date, we can absolutely do that! If a specific training session needs to be moved, giving notice 12 hours prior to the start time is required. If a training session is canceled less than 12 hours to the start time, your session will not be rescheduled unless the cancellation was due to an emergency.

14. Do you offer training for specific breeds?

I work with all breeds, no matter the size, age, or behavioral history they present with. As a Family Dog Mediator I have a unique perspective regarding breeds of dogs and my job is to bridge the communication gap between dogs and their owners. Specific breeds can communicate differently than other breeds, so it is imperative to decipher your dog’s specific needs and wants to get the most out of training them.

15. Can you help with leash pulling, barking, or other common behavior problems?

Yes! Check out everything I can train here.

16. What should I expect during a training session?

I come to your home, whether you are present or not to work with your dog on the behaviors we have discussed previously. Most owners give me a key or garage code so I can let myself in. I then will give your dog a potty break and begin training. As the program progresses, your dog will likely get to go on “field trips”, where I take them to dog-friendly pet stores to level up their training with high-level distractions.

17. We have cameras set up in and around our home. Is that okay?

Yes, absolutely.

18. What types of equipment do I need for training?

It depends on what kind of behaviors your dog will learn during their program. At the very minimum they will need high-value soft treats, a flat collar, a 6ft flat non-retractable leash, and an appropriate, well-fitted harness. Other supplies can include long leashes, dog beds, baby gates, and peanut butter, but are not necessary for every training program.

19. How can I prepare my dog for training sessions?

Be sure to have all supplies ready by the time your dog begins their training program. If your dog is going to be working on any reactivity issues during their program, try to limit their exposure to their triggers as much as possible. This will help prevent the behavior from getting worse before your training program begins. Otherwise you don’t need to feel any pressure to practice anything!

20. Do you offer training for aggressive dogs?

Yes, including those with a bite history. All dogs deserve support and help!

21. Can you train older dogs, or is it better to start training when they're young?

Dogs of any age can begin training! I’ve worked with many senior dogs who have made progress in time for their “Golden Years”.

22. How do you handle dogs with fear or anxiety issues during training?

I evaluate the dog’s level of anxiety and go over a full behavioral evaluation with their owner. In some cases I recommend seeing a veterinary behaviorist prior to the training program to rule out any pain or underlying conditions. In some cases medication or supplements are recommended to help the dog be able to cope with being triggered. In many cases these medications can be phased out over time.

23. What kind of behaviors can you teach for Service Dogs?

All behaviors needed for public access, the Canine Good Citizen exam (not legally required for service dogs, but a great benchmark to prove your pup can handle working in public), seizure alert, diabetic alert, heart rate alert for POTS, anxiety attack alert, interruption for self harming behaviors, and deep pressure therapy. Find out more here.

24. What sets your training approach apart from other trainers?

Many “problem behaviors” are symptoms of something deeper such as underlying conditions, unfulfilled breed requirements, or inappropriate environmental set up. I look at the whole picture including your dog’s breed, history, personality, family members, and environment to solve any issues you are facing with your dog. The unique combination of training experience I have beginning in 2012 with elephants and medical alert service dogs also sets me apart from any other trainer in the area. Read more about my previous experience here.

25. Do you offer training for specific activities, like agility or therapy dog certification?

Service dog tasks and therapy dog tasks are offered, as well as Canine Good Citizen Exams. However I do not offer agility at this time. I recommend Zoom Room for their easy-going and fun agility lessons!

26. What rescue organizations have you worked with?

Right now I am partnered with Lucky Labs Rescue, offering discounted training sessions to their foster dogs. They are a fantastic non-profit rescue for beautiful Labrador Retrievers. Find more information on their website.
